Annual Dinner Huge Success

Hi MWCR members and supporters!

Desert tableMWCR’s Annual Dinner and Fundraiser was a huge success with over fifty people attending the dinner and over $3,100 raised for MWCR’s Collies, including donations from people who were unable to attend the dinner!  Thank you to everyone who attended the dinner and who supported MWCR.

Several first-time attendees added to the joy of seeing old friends and making new friends.  One of the surprise attendees was former Minnesota State Senator, and former Lieutenant Governor candidate, Gen Olson who was invited by her neighbor, Arnie Hilk, and his three MWCR Collies.

People had fun shopping for homemade jams, jellies, gift baskets, dog treats in pet-themed containers, and dog turkey jerky treats made by Kitty Hilk of Gray Gables Farm.  The MWCR merchandise table was busy as was our “free” table of items.  The silent auction was packed with wonderful items thanks to the numerous donations from our members and supporters who made personal donations as well as gathered donations from various businesses.  The lasagna dinner was delicious and our dessert table was overflowing with goodies brought by people.

Kate Anders of Pretty Good Dog gave an entertaining and educational presentation on Canine Body Language.  Her presentation included photos of MWCR’s foster, Thunder, to illustrate the difference between “soft eye” and “hard eye” in dogs.  Former President, Mary Hickerson, was honored for her years of work on behalf of our collies and MWCR.  Adoption Coordinator and Vice President Sarah Rebernick gave an update on former and current foster dogs, thanked those who foster and are involved in the adoption process, and gave an update on the Bon Ton coupon booklets project.  In the summer of 2013, MWCR adopted its 1,000th collie!  Give to the Max Day Coordinator and Secretary MyLinda Barke discussed the upcoming Give to the Max Day fundraiser.  Blog editor Chris Norman and Intake Coordinator Barb Heideman were introduced to the group.  The program also included a financial update and an activities update. In 2012, MWCR had nearly $77,000 in expenses, including about $62,000 in veterinary expenses for our foster collies.  We received nearly $65,000 from donations, adoption fees, and merchandise sales, leaving us with a deficit of about $12,000.  Fortunately, we had funds from the previous year to cover the deficit, and 2013 is looking more positive.  MWCR either participated in or organized 32 events and fundraisers in 2013, a new record for us.  Cat Olund and Laura Michlig spent many hours organizing the volunteers to staff these events.

Door prizes, games, and free items always add to the fun of our Annual Dinner.  Carol Brandenburg generously donated “Rescued by Love” dog bandanas and dog tug toys for all to take home.  Carol also donated the jar of dog treats for the “Guess the Number of Treats” contest, a large cake, a jar of after dinner mints, and numerous items for the silent auction.  Catherine Loveridge donated the “doggie bags” filled with samples of Angie’s Kettle Corn and Marley videos as well as the two books given to the winners of our Collie Trivia contest.  Mary Hickerson did the honor of drawing names for the door prizes which included a bottle of Collie Isle Winery wine, a $25 Mills Fleet Farm gift certificate, an MWCR travel mug, a pearl earring and bracelet set, and a collie picture frame.  Of course, we couldn’t forget our dogs, so we had drawings for a stuffed dog toy, a Christmas stocking filled with dog toys, and a doggie Christmas stocking.

Special thanks to all who made this event a success.  Barb Gibson recommended and contacted our speaker, Kate Anders.  Dave Gibson served as the photographer for the dinner (there are six albums of pictures from the dinner found here).  Linda Riegger, Cat Olund, Judy Roggow, and others organized the silent auction.  Barb Gibson and Robin Kashuba registered people.  Mary Ann Statz staffed the MWCR merchandise table, and  KJ Norman handled the credit card transactions.

And, a big thanks to Laura Michlig, Sarah Rebernick, Barb Gibson, Cat Olund, Catherine Loveridge, Kitty Hilk, Arnie Hilk, Linda Riegger, Mary Ann Statz, and Robin Kashuba who serve on our Events/Fundraising Committee and spent the year planning, organizing, and staffing MWCR events.  You do a great job of representing MWCR to the public!

Hope to see you next November at the Annual Dinner and Fundraiser!
